Dan Evans completes incredible comeback vs Mackenzie McDonald to reach Australian Open second round

Dan Evans completed a remarkable turnaround to overcome Mackenzie McDonald in five sets and reach the second round of the Australian Open.

The British number one, making his first appearance in a Grand Slam as a seeded player, was forced to dig deep after losing the opening two sets and looked on the verge of an exit.

But the 29-year-old came roaring back to seal a 3-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory in three and a half hours on Court 14.

There was nothing free about the Briton in the first two sets and McDonald, whose ranking of 129 is artificially low after injury, took full advantage.

Evans was struggling to contain his frustration, hurling his racket during the final game of the second set, but an immediate break at the start of the second changed the momentum and he eventually came through in impressive fashion.

In the second round Evans will face talented Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka.
