Dan Carter has been named BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year for 2015.

Carter, who was part of the New Zealand team that successfully defended the Rugby World Cup this autumn, was voted winner for a first time via a public vote and from a shortlist that included Usain Bolt, Novak Djokovic, Katie Ledecky, Jordan Spieth and Serena Williams.

“I’m thrilled to have been voted BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year by the UK public,” said the 33-year-old fly-half.

“It’s been an incredible year for me on British soil and the support has been phenomenal. It was an incredibly competitive shortlist and I’m honoured to have been recognised alongside these great sportsmen and women from around the world.”

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place at The SSE Arena in Belfast on Sunday and will be shown live on BBC One, from 6.50pm. Andy Murray and Jessica Ennis-Hill are among the favourites to win the main prize.
