Dan Campbell made no bones about it after the game. The Detroit Lions head coach was not happy with the mistakes his team made in Green Bay that led to a 35-17 loss after an impressive first half where the Lions raced to a 17-14 lead.
“Crap happened,” Campbell said dejectedly in his postgame press conference. “That’s on us. They didn’t have those errors, they didn’t have the fumbles we did. That’s on us.”
Campbell did try to show some encouragement for his team’s performance.
“For me, there’s little things we’ve got to clean up, but there’s also things that I’m encouraged by, players I’m encouraged by,” Campbell continued. “(CB) Bobby Price encouraged me. Jared (Goff) encouraged me, the offensive line encouraged me, (RB D’Andre Swift) Swifty encouraged me.
I see improvement in some areas but certainly not enough. When you play a team like this you can’t have the mistakes that we had.”
Campbell had a keen sense of the impact of the mistakes, especially on offense. He discussed the failed 4th-down pass from Jared Goff to Quintez Cephus and the fumbles, noting,
“Every time we struggled offensively it’s because we shot ourselves in the foot.”
Campbell gets a short week to prepare his Lions to stop shooting down at their own feet and instead take aim at the Baltimore Ravens in Ford Field in Week 3.
