Dan Biggar suffers painful knock ahead of Wales' defence of Six Nations title

Dan Biggar has given Wales an injury scare before the Six Nations after suffering a painful injury to his left leg.

He suffered a suspected ‘dead leg’ during Northampton Saints’ 33-26 victory over Gloucester at a sold-out Franklin’s Gardens in the Gallagher Premiership.

Wales’ World Cup play-maker had lengthy treatment and his left thigh heavily strapped after taking a knock in the first half.

But he didn’t reappear for the second half with Northampton coach Chris Boyd saying Biggar “took a hit just above the knee”.

Boyd was unable to put a time-scale on the outside-half’s recovery with Biggar set to have more checks and intensive treatment from medics over the next couple of days.

He had converted Mike Haywood’s try and put over two penalties for eight points and Sale to lead 13-7 entering the interval.

The victory enabled Northampton to retain their unbeaten home record in the Premiership this season.

Biggar was unavailable for Wayne Pivac’s debut match as Wales coach, the 43-33 victory over the Barbarians last month, because it took place outside the international window and England’s clubs refuse to release imports for such fixtures.

Cardiff Blues’ Jarrod Evans made a positive impact after starting against invitation side Barbarians with Dragons’ Sam Davies replacing him in the second half.

Wales other top two No.10s, Gareth Anscombe and Rhys Patchell, are both on the injured list.

Last season’s Six Nations Grand Slam play-maker Anscombe missed the World Cup after badly damaging a knee in a warm-up match with England last August.

Ospreys’ big-money signing will sit out the entire campaign following two operations while Scarlets star Patchell is recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered against New Zealand in the third-place play-off defeat in Japan and isn’t due to return to action until after the Six Nations has started.
