Dan Biggar steals the headlines in English Premiership as coach says 'he's as good as anyone in the world'

It can be a hard act to follow winning the Grand Slam one week and being back in the day job the next.

But there were no signs of a post-Six Nations hangover for Welsh No.10 Dan Biggar judging by the rave reviews the former Osprey has generated for his performance in the east Midlands derby on Friday night.

Biggar has seen James Grayson filling his Northampton boots with aplomb while away on Grand Slam business with Warren Gatland's Six Nations champions.

But Saints boss Chris Boyd brought back his big gun for the Gallagher Premiership clash with Leicester Tigers, at Welford Road, and the 70-times capped 29-year-old didn't disappoint.

With Leicester recalling England's Manu Tuilagi, Jonny May, Ellis Genge, George Ford and Dan Cole, one report on the Saints' 29-15 victory put Biggar's controlling influence and 14-point haul into a nutshell.

In getting a nine out of 10 rating from his local newspaper, the Northampton Chronicle went on to say: "Controlled the game, kicked well and defended brilliantly, making a massive 22 tackles.

"Tigers brought back five Six Nations stars, but Saints only had Dan Biggar to recall. And in the end, Biggar was far more influential than the Tigers quintet combined."

Boyd was even more lavish in his praise of his 2018 arrival from the Liberty Stadium region.

The Kiwi has had some high-profile All Blacks and Springboks under his wing in a coaching career that's taken in stints with the Wellington Lions, Sharks, Hurricanes and New Zealand Under-20s.

But he said of his prized asset at Franklin's Gardens: "At what Dan does, he’s as good as anybody in the world.

"Along with TJ Perenara, he’s probably the most competitive person I’ve ever coached. He just demands incredibly high standards.

He added in the Daily Telegraph: “He keeps people on task and he can control, run and organise a game – as you’d have seen for Wales.

"He does that really well for us and his skill-set is complemented by other guys who can do other parts of the game.”
