Dan Biggar 'exceptional' for Northampton Saints in win over Wasps and praised for his sportsmanship

Dan Biggar lit up Northampton Saints' clash with Dai Young's Wasps by setting up a brilliant try.

The Wales points-machine burst onto a pass from centre Rory Hutchinson just inside his half during the Gallagher Premiership clash at Coventry's Ricoh Arena.

He escaped the attempted tackle of South Africa international No.8 Nizaam Carr and sprinted 30m before drawing Northampton's remaining defender and putting half-back Cobus Reinach over for the score.

Biggar, who converted, had suffered a "dead leg" during Saints' victory over Gloucester last weekend.

He had also been battling illness but didn't show any ill-effects in the opening half against former Wales captain Young's Wasps.

Former Lions lock and England World Cup winner Ben Kay, a pundit with BT Sport, purred over the play of Biggar.

He said: "Dan Biggar was exceptional, he makes the call, times his run to perfection so he can put the accelerator on it.

"He was just hiding there and calls it. When Carr gets a hand on him he doesn't panic and try the off-load straightaway.

"He realises he is going to the have power to drive through. Lots of players would have given the ball but he held on and that creates the two on one."

The game ended 35-31 to Northampton. Biggar converted all five of Saints' tries for a 10-point haul and also earned widespread praise for his sportsmanship.

He sprinted to a touchline to check on Jacob Umaga after the Wasps player had been injured in a collision and was being led to the tunnel.

Northampton finished the match with 13 players following the sending off of Tom Collins for a high challenge and the sin-binning of Reinach.

A penalty try had given Wasps a 31-28 lead but substitute forward Taqele Naiyaravoro went over for Biggar to convert and Northampton to win and stay within a point of leaders Exeter at the top of the Premiership.

Outside-half Biggar missed Wayne Pivac's debut match as Wales coach, the 43-33 victory over the Barbarians in Cardiff, because England's Premiership club refuse to release imports for international matches outside the official Test window.

But Biggar hopes to be in Pivac's side for the Six Nations opener against Italy, at the Principality Stadium on February 1.
