Damson Idris gets major awards-season boost after "F1" movie success

F1 star Damson Idris has been nominated for two Black Reel Awards after his performance alongside Brad Pitt for the Formula 1 film.

The British actor has been nominated for both Outstanding Supporting Performance and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance for the 2026 Black Reel Awards, which honour the "brilliance and resilience of Black storytellers".

Prior to his role in F1, Idris starred in crime drama Snowfall for six seasons and sci-fi action film Outside the Wire, as well as appearances in theatre and TV series, including Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone and Swarm.

Outstanding Supporting Performance

In the Outstanding Supporting Performance category, the 34-year-old has been nominated alongside Miles Canton for Sinners, Regina Hall for One Battle After Another, David Jonsson for The Long Walk, Delroy Lindo for Sinners, Wunmi Mosaku for Sinners, Da'Vine Joy Randolph for Eternity, A$AP Rocky for Highest 2 Lowest, Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another and Jeffrey Wright for Highest 2 Lowest.

Outstanding Breakthrough Performance

In the Outstanding Breakthrough Performance, Idris is up against Miles Canton for Sinners, Susan Chardy for On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, Naya Desir-Johnson for Sarah's Oil, Chase Infiniti for One Battle After Another, Jayme Lawson for Sinners, A$AP Rocky for Highest 2 Lowest, Abou Sangaré for Souleymane's Story, SZA for One of Them Days and Tyriq Withers for HIM.

Idris starred beside Brad Pitt in F1, which follows nomadic driver Sonny Hayes (Pitt) as he returns to the championship to help the struggling APXGP alongside rookie driver Joshua Pearce (Idris).

The star-studded cast also featured Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Javier Bardem and Kim Bodnia.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie was shot during real-life race weekends. It features the drivers from the 2023 and 2024 F1 seasons, including seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who also served as an executive producer.

Since its release in June 2025, the blockbuster has exceeded $630million at the global box office.
