Damping down goes on at Surrey heath fire by ‘Britain’s Beverly Hills’

Fire crews are likely to remain at the scene of a devastating wildfire that stopped play at a prestigious Surrey golf course.

Nearly 140 acres of Chobham Common — next to the exclusive Wentworth estate known as “Britain’s Beverly Hills” — went up in flames forcing 100 residents to flee their homes on Friday.

The blaze raced towards the fringes of Wentworth Golf Course, leading to the cancellation of the Rose Ladies Series event.

Surrey Fire and Rescue service said crews had made “significant progress” against the fire and are now “tackling a number of hotspots and damping down the area”.

Owners of 60 gated properties, costing upwards of £2 million, were evacuated from their homes near the heathland. Yesterday they were told they will be allowed to return.

The fire service said crews will remain in the area over the coming days amid fears that another week of blistering heat could allow the fire to take hold again.
