'Damp and mouldy room caused my child to get sick' - mother's warning over sheltered flats

A Bristol mother says black mould growing inside her room at her sheltered accommodation was making her toddler ill.

Katie Bristow moved into Priory Court, in Knowle, in November and noticed her 19-month-old son was starting to suffer from a persistent cough.

After pulling her wardrobe forward, she discovered big patches of black mould spreading across her walls.

The 19-year-old moved into the sheltered housing because there was no longer space at her mum's house.

"Priory Court mother and baby unit is absolutely disgusting, " said Katie. "They expect new-born babies up to the age of two to stay in a place with this much mould in one room.

"Me and my son have been very ill since living here - my son got a really bad cough. I took him to the doctors and they said staying in a damp place with mould could cause his cough.

"I want to warn other mums that they shouldn't go there if it's offered."

Elim Housing Association runs the building and bosses insist regular checks of rooms are carried out.

A spokesperson said: "The room in question was subject to an inspection on 30 December. The inspection noted a small amount of mould developing on the window frame and this has been addressed.

"We believe that the mould captured in the footage provided would have been behind a large item of furniture that was moved upon the resident leaving the property.

"During our room inspections, we do not open or move any items of furniture out of respect for our residents’ privacy. We can confirm that this mould was not present upon the room initially being let and the room will receive a full clean prior to it being let to another resident."
