Damon Severson airs out frustration as Devils lose third straight game on Sunday

The TV cameras followed Damon Severson down the tunnel, airing his frustration out in public.

Severson took out his anger on his hockey stick there during the Devils' third straight loss on Sunday.

The breaking point came late in the second period when he was robbed on a point-blank chance by Washington goalie Ilya Samsonov.

Somehow, another dominant effort by the Devils went to waste.

Travis Zajac had two goals while Jesper Bratt and Yegor Sharangovich both scored, but it was not enough for New Jersey in a 5-4 loss to Washington at Prudential Center. Jack Hughes hit the post twice in a game when the Devils outshot Washington, 39-19.

The Devils have now lost all eight matchups against the Capitals this season, including two that went to overtime.

Alex Ovechkin scored three points for the Capitals including his 265th career power play goal, tying Brett Hull for second-most in NHL history.

“Our foundation has to be our play away from the puck,” coach Lindy Ruff said before the game.

“It has to start there. We have to play well there knowing that we're not a team -- and we've proven that -- that's going to score four or five goals a night. So we have to play well defensively. When we get the opportunities, it's really bearing down on those key opportunities, those A+ opportunities.”

Zajac opened the scoring, but the Caps took the lead for good with three unanswered goals from T.J. Oshie, Conor Sheary and Ovechkin.

Kyle Palmieri comes out of the lineup

Devils forward Kyle Palmieri was held out of the lineup for "precautionary reasons" on Sunday.

The Montvale native is rumored to be one of the top players available at the Trade Deadline, which is April 12. His agent confirmed on Twitter that Palmieri is being held out "in anticipation of a trade in the coming days or weeks".

Palmieri, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, has scored 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 34 games this season.

With Palmieri out against the Capitals, Nick Merkley came back into the lineup on the right wing.
