Damon Jones says soup J.R. Smith threw at him was ‘hot as hell’

Damon Jones has had a busy last few days of making headlines after hitting the ESPN talk show circuit yesterday. And whether unintentionally or not, he revived a storyline that once again makes the Lakers look like they were not built for life with LeBron.

Let’s not forget that almost exactly a year ago, the Cavaliers suspended J.R. Smith for throwing a bowl of soup at Damon Jones, who was then an assistant on the Cavaliers. Jones finally went on the record about the soup, which he said was quite hot.

News moves fast these days and it’s hard to hold onto stories, but as much as the Davis fiasco breathed drama into the Lakers, it’s worth remembering the Cavaliers weren’t exactly drama-free either. They were just in the Eastern Conference and also had a more veteran-led group, from the coaches to the players, than the Lakers did this season.

Although the Lakers play in the stronger conference, the reminder of J.R. Smith throwing soup at one of the assistants reminds that NBA teams often have lots of conflicts happening. It’s how teams deal with it that often separates the winners from the losers.
