Damning Timo Werner claim made as Thomas Tuchel told to make Chelsea call ahead of Real Madrid

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfield star Rafael van der Vaart has called for Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel to play Hakim Ziyech over Timo Werner.

Both players joined the Blues last summer in big-money deals and have, unfortunately, struggled to live up to expectations in their first season in English football.

Ziyech has racked up 29 appearances for the Blues this season, scoring four goals and claiming four assists, whilst Werner has netted just ten goals in 41 appearances.

Werner, who joined the Blues for around £50million from RB Leipzig, was tipped to be the leading marksman in the Premier League this season by many after showing such tremendous goal-scoring ability in Germany in recent seasons. However, he has failed to hit the high notes, scoring just two goals since November 7.

Chelsea boss Tuchel suggests Champions League is up for grabs

That record has seen the Germany international come under deep scrutiny from van der Vaart, who has described him as a "blind horse."

With that said, the Dutchman believes Ziyech is better suited to playing under Thomas Tuchel and is keen to see him combine with Mason Mount.

"No, it's because he's the best option," van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport, as quoted by Goal, when asked if he was urging Ziyech to be included because of knowing him from his time at Ajax.

"He is always able to provide for the striker and [Olivier] Giroud needs guys like him. Mount plays in exactly the same way, so that's why I would pick him too.

"Timo Werner is super fast, and maybe that is something good to have in an away game when Chelsea are under pressure, but all he does is put his head down and run, which leads to nothing.

"Mount is a terrific footballer, and I think he can get even better as he gains some power, but Werner is truly a blind horse. He already shown that's what he's like when he played in Germany - and he's doing it again now."

In truth, Werner's debut season in England has been a big disappointment. For a player who netted 35 goals for club and country last season to have returned a figure of just ten so far this term is a major concern, meaning Tuchel has presented with a puzzle to solve in an attempt to get his Blues career kick-started.

However, Tuchel, despite working his magic in other areas, has been unable to unleash the German's true talents in England so far, meaning he looks set to be forced into signing a new striker this summer.
