Damien Hirst sculptures to be installed in Leeds for huge new festival

Leeds native Damien Hirst is returning to his home town as part of an exciting series of sculpture installations across Yorkshire.

As per The Guardian, seven of Hirst's sculptures will be displayed in Leeds and Wakefield as part of the inaugural Yorkshire Sculpture International festival.

Hirst grew up in Leeds and attended Allerton Grange School, later heading on to Jacob Kramer College, now known as Leeds College of Art.

The Yorkshireman was famously a hell-raiser in the 1990s, and is reportedly one of the wealthiest living artists in the entire world, with his fortune valued in the hundreds of millions.

His 'sheep in formaldehyde' sculpture will reportedly sit in Leeds Art Gallery’s Ziff room, and other sculptures will feature outdoors in the city centre.

Hirst told The Guardian that it was a “double excitement” for him to see his work in different locations in his home city.

Other sculptures will be on display at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield, and Hirst expressed his delight at unveiling some of his best-known work back in Yorkshire.

He said: “The giant bronze sculptures at YSP are where they belong – they’re just made for that setting.

"I used to hang out a lot on Ilkley Moor and Otley Chevin, and I will always love the Yorkshire landscape.”

Hirst's work will be in YSP from Saturday, April 13, with the Leeds installations coming in from Saturday, June 22.

The exciting new festival is a collaboration between the biggest art locations in West Yorkshire - Leeds Art Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Henry Moore Institute and The Hepworth Gallery.

It will run from Saturday June, 22 to Sunday September, 29, and will be completely free for all.
