Damien Duff in Celtic mystery as former coach quits Republic of Ireland job

Damien Duff has sparked surprise by leaving his role as first team coach with the Republic of Ireland.

It comes just months after he walked out on a similar position with Celtic to take up the role in his homeland.

Duff had decided to head back to Ireland to spend more time with his family but the FAI announced on Friday night that the ex-winger had stepped down.

Ireland have struggled since Stephen Kenny took charge of the team with no wins in his eight games in charge so far.

Duff was highly-rated at Celtic and many have put their Premiership struggles this year down to his absence.

He was replaced by Gavin Strachan as first team coach, with Neil Lennon appointing the former Peterborough coach to help him and John Kennedy.

Duff told the FAI website: “I want to thank Stephen Kenny for the opportunity he gave me to coach with the senior Ireland team and I wish Stephen, Keith and the players all the very best of luck for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
