Damien Duff hammers England as former Newcastle player raises awkward Gareth Southgate questions

Damien Duff does not believe that Gareth Southgate knows his best team following England's 'bad' performance against Scotland.

The Three Lions were jeered by a section of their own supporters following a limp display in a goalless draw against the Tartan Army at Wembley on Friday night.

it was the first meeting between the two sides at the European Championships in 25 years and it was Scotland who rose to the occasion.

Although John Stones hit the post in the first half, Scotland looked the likelier of the two sides to win the game and Jordan Pickford had to make a crucial stop to keep out Stephen O'Donnell's goalbound effort before Reece James later cleared Lydon Dykes' shot off the line.

While analysing the 0-0 draw alongside Arsenal legend Liam Brady, Duff said England's display was 'awful' and the Irishman noted how the Three Lions' 'world-class' attacking talent have not looked the same players while representing their country at the tournament.

"For as good as Scotland were, England were as bad as Liam said there," Duff told RTE. "It's three years since Russia. England have played 3-4-3 nearly the whole three years. All of a sudden, they come to the tournament - I know [Harry] Maguire is out - and they're playing 4-2-3-1.

"Gareth Southgate said in the press this week that he knows 10 out of his best 11. I don't think he's anywhere near that. He doesn't know his best right-back. He doesn't know his best left-back. I don't think he knows his frontline, either. I don't see it at all.

"When you compare Belgium and Italy to them...Belgium were struggling at half-time [against Denmark]. That bit of X-Factor, zip, whatever you want, creativity, boom, boom, goal, game over. Italy are a proper fluid outfit - such a pretty watch - whereas England are just so lopsided and lethargic like Liam says.

"They take [Harry] Kane off. They can't even bring on a number one striker. [Marcus] Rashford is a top player but he plays off the side for his club. [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin is sitting on the bench."

Second-placed England can still top Group D but Southgate's side are going to have to offer so much more to overcome the Czech Republic at Wembley in their final group game on Tuesday night.
