Damien Delaney announces retirement from professional football

Damien Delaney said he lived out his dream after announcing his retirement from professional football today.

The 37-year-old defender hangs up his boots after a short spell with Waterford in the League of Ireland.

Delaney first came home to join Cork City in July 2018 after 18 years in England that saw him make 138 Premier League appearances for Leicester and Crystal Palace.

The centre back, who earned nine international caps for the Boys in Green, wanted to move aside for the young players at Waterford United.

He wrote on Twitter: “There’s players there with fantastic potential who need to play to develop.

“I don’t want to hinder that development so the time has come. Thanks to everyone for giving me the opportunity.”

“So that’s me officially retired. Thanks to everyone who’s played a part in helping me live out my dreams. It’s been amazing.”

Waterford manager Alan Reynolds said: "I want to thank Damien for everything he’s done at the club this season since he joined.

“He’s been great helping the younger players and a great guy to have around the squad.

"His experience has helped the whole squad and I’m grateful for him coming down to play for the club."

“Everyone at Waterford FC wishes him all the best for the future.”
