Damien Comer insists every team is defensive - not just Galway

Damien Comer insists it's wrong to single out Galway as a defensive team when nearly every county side operates the same way - Dublin included.

Injured since just after Christmas, Comer has just missed out on making his return in the Connacht final against Roscommon on Sunday.

But his observation of the championship as a whole has convinced him that those who criticise Galway's approach and hanker for a a Corofin-type attacking game have it wrong.

"Every team is defensive now," the marksman insisted. "I don't think you'd get away with that style at intercounty level.

"Corofin are a great side but it's totally different when you bring it to an intercounty level and I don't think you'd get away with that style.

"You'd see different tactics from different managers, every team is set up differently..If you're playing into a defensive structure it's probably harder to kick the ball because you're just leading to turnovers.

"But I think it's evident in everything (you see). Even Dublin, one of the lads who was at the Louth game sent me a picture when they were down to 14 men and there were 14 of them behind the ball.

"The Louth goalie was out nearly between the 45 and the 21 - and it was just funny, because everyone would label us a defensive team, and Fermanagh and a few others, but it's nearly every team at this stage."

Comer, who claims that the Tribesmen were "building nicely", added: "You'll see it throughout the championship. It's the way the game has gone. You'll defend in numbers, you attack in numbers but it's part and parcel of it.

"I don't know is it going to change any time soon. I think it probably has gone a little bit more expansive than it was for Galway, but I think in general.

"At the end of the day, you still need to score to win games. Scoring around 12 or 13 points a game isn't going to win you most games.

"You need to be getting that attacking element. So every team needs to attack but again you need to protect the house as well, that's important".
