Dame Vera Lynn joins Alfie Boe and West End stars for 'We'll Meet Again' VE Day performance

Alfie Boe came together with the stars of London’s West End to perform “We’ll Meet Again” in a special video to commemorate VE Day.

Marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the cast of musical theatre artists sang the song made famous by Dame Vera Lynn in 1939.

The video for WhatsOnStage was introduced by Lynn herself, with the 103-year-old sending her “love and best wishes to everyone in the theatre industry”.

The likes of Sharon D Clarke, Kerry Ellis, Layton Williams and Louise Dearman joined the ensemble cast in their performance, each singing from their own homes.

With lyrics reminding listeners to “keep smiling” and that people will “meet again some sunny day”, “We’ll Meet Again” has taken on extra poignancy during the coronavirus lockdown.

The song was performed in tribute to the British theatre scene, which was forced to come to a standstill on 16 March due to the pandemic.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh, who is best known as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-time collaborator, has warned that it is unlikely theatres will be able to reopen before 2021 in the current climate.
