Dame Sarah Gilbert: Barbie honour scientist who designed Oxford covid vaccine with new doll

Mattel, creator of Barbie, has created a doll of Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, the scientist and Oxford University professor who designed the Oxford covid vaccine.

Dame Gilbert, who also led the first trial of an Ebola vaccine back in 2014, admitted to finding it "very strange" in the beginning but now hopes it will inspire children by showing them careers they may not be aware of such as a vaccinologist.

She began designing the covid vaccine in early 2020 when the news began to emerge from China, and was then recognised with a damehood in the Queen's Birthday Honours list after the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved.

The vaccine, used by Nicola Sturgeon, is now the most widely used around the world, with doses sent to more than 170 countries, according to the BBC.

The doll is one of six set to honour women working in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fields with the company also creating the first hijab-wearing Barbie launched back in 2017.

This was in order to honour an American fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad, who became the first US woman to wear the Islamic headscarf while competing at the Olympics.

Another addition to Barbie's collection was singer David Bowie and civil rights pioneer, Rosa Parks.

Dame Gilbert said: "I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls into STEM careers and hope that children who see my Barbie will realise how vital careers in science are to help the world around us."
