Dame Mary Berry makes TV talent show return as she appears on Celebrity Masterchef

Dame Mary Berry will make a surprise appearance during the semi-final stages of Celebrity MasterChef next week - with her having teased that she will be a tough critic.

The food writer and baker, 87, is best known for having been a judge on the Great British Bake Off before leaving six years ago, and will appear in next Thursday's episode.

It will see the remaining contestants on the celebrity edition of the BBC culinary series tasked with recreating one of her "favourite and delicious signature classic recipes".

The celebrities will have to "master unfamiliar ingredients and techniques" in the hopes of impressing Dame Mary as well as judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

She said: "I can't wait to see these talented MasterChef semi-finalists bring my dishes to life and hopefully they are recipes they would enjoy making at home too."

Dame Mary further told the Press Association: "They need to remember though that I’ve got eyes in the back of my head. They may think I’m not watching but I will be…"

It's been six years since she left the GBBO, which was relocating from the BBC to Channel 4 when she decided to leave the show. She had been a judge on the show from 2010 until 2016.

The latest series of Celebrity MasterChef continues this week with another batch of celebrities battling it out in the kitchen, including Strictly Come Dancing 's Katya Jones.

She will compete for a place in the semi-finals against actor Adam Pearson, RuPaul's Drag Race UK star Kitty Scott-Claus, presenter Lisa Snowdon and actor Ryan Thomas.

Discussing her motivation for taking part, Katya - who's been a professional dancer for 30 years - said she wanted to try being the student in a field she isn't experienced with.

Katya said the experience is out of her comfort zone (BBC)

She said: "I thought to be on the other side, be the beginner, be the amateur and being judged for something that is so outside my comfort zone is going to make me a better person."

Actor and disability rights campaigner Adam, who has neurofibromatosis, said he wanted to take part to "learn a new skill" and embrace a "seize the day" approach to life.

Celebrity MasterChef continues on BBC One tonight at 9pm. The semi-finals week airs across BBC One and BBC iPlayer on September 6, September 8 and September 9.
