Dame Jenni Murray is set to leave BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour after 33 years.

The broadcaster is currently the longest-serving presenter in the long-running radio show’s history.

During Murray’s tenure on the show, the Barnsley-born presenter interviewed figures including Bette Davis, Margaret Thatcher, Hillary Clinton, and Margaret Atwood.

She said to the BBC that it was now “time to move on”.

“I’ve spent nearly half my life with Woman’s Hour and it’s been a privilege ‎and delight to inform, educate and entertain a loyal and growing audience of women and men,” she continued.

Murray’s final Woman’s Hour appearance will be broadcast on 1 October, 2020.

BBC director general Tony Hall praised the “remarkable” presenter. “Few have matched her outstanding contribution to the BBC and our audience,” he said.

“For more than three decades, Jenni has been an unmistakeable and warm voice that has interviewed many of the most well-known women in the world, and helped illuminate issues that matter. The radio airwaves won’t be the same without her,” he added.

It is not yet been confirmed who will be taking over from the outgoing Murray. The BBC has said that a new presenter will be confirmed “in due course”.
