Dame Helen Mirren praises the Queen's 'open-mindedness' and ability to 'accept the new'

Dame Helen Mirren has praised the Queen for her "open-mindedness" as well as her ability to "accept the new".

The iconic actress, who played Queen Elizabeth II in the film The Queen, has joined a new project called The Music of Kings and Queens, in celebration of Her Majesty's 95th birthday.

Although she admits she isn't a royalist, Helen admitted she definitely is a "Queen-ist".

"Queen Elizabeth II has always had the extraordinary ability to accept the new and go with the times," she explained.

"All I know is what I’ve observed, and to me, she has always seemed very open-minded. But that ability to accept the new is a very interesting quality."

The actress continued to Woman&Home : "The Queen is very consistent. She’s never put on weight but she’s never been too thin, she drinks but we’ve never seen her drink too much.

"She has banquets, but never eats too much. There is just an incredible, calm consistency about her."

The Queen's birthday was on April 21.

Dame Helen won several awards for her portrayal as the Queen in the 2006 film - including an Oscar, a BAFTA, a SAG, a Golden Globe and more.

Back in 2019, the star admitted she had a "lesson in embarrassment" while having tea with Queen Elizabeth and the late Prince Phillip.

She was invited over for tea, but was shocked to find out it was an "intimate affair".

Dame Helen forgot how to address the Duke of Edinburgh when she was trying to ask for milk for her tea.

“I mean, is it sir? Is it your majesty? Is it your highness?” she said. “Is it rude to ask him to pass the milk? Or should I just ask for a lackey?”

The July issue of woman&home is on sale June 3, 2021
