Canberrans considering a midweek migration to the snow won't be disappointed with an approaching cold front bringing a significant dump to the alpine regions over the next couple of days.
Closer to home, the Brindabellas could be in for a dusting on Wednesday, alongside around 15-20 millimetres of rain predicted to fall on the hills over the next 24 hour period.
Canberra City can expect up to five millimetres of rain with showers forecast throughout the evening, according to the Bureau of Meteorology forecast.
Meteorologist Helen Reid said if public health directions still allow ACT residents to travel to the snow this weekend, they're unlikely to be disappointed.
"We're hoping for a good amount today and tomorrow and hoping to keep it fresh for the weekend," she said.
Ms Reid said the cloudy and wet weather would mean a cold day in Canberra on Thursday, with a forecasted maximum of 13 degrees.
While surrounding NSW regions could expect wet and warmish weather coming up, it was not expected to be warmer in the ACT until Saturday, Ms Reid said.
The bureau was predicting a top of 16 degrees on Saturday with a medium chance of shower. A top of 15 degrees was forecast for the ACT on Sunday with 3-6 millimetres of rain possible.
The bureau had warned that damaging winds averaging 60 to 70km/h were possible for southern parts of the ACT, Snowy Mountains, Central Tablelands and parts of the Illawarra and South Coast on Wednesday.
For alpine areas above 1900 metres winds are likely to average 80 to 90 km/h with gusts of up to 125 km/h on Wednesday evening.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife recommended backcountry travel be postponed. Locations which might be affected include Braidwood, Cooma, Thredbo, Nowra, Bowral and Katoomba.
