Damaging strikes at the heart of the NHS have been averted thanks to a new pay offer.
Two of the country’s biggest health unions have voted to accept a new deal – the biggest wage rise since devolution – which will see most workers receive an additional £2205 a year.
And while other unions have still to reveal the results of their ballot, it is understood the vote in favour by the biggest health union Unison should be enough to end the threats of industrial action.
The Daily Record is the first to hold the Scottish Government to account when things go wrong in the health service, but Humza Yousaf is to be congratulated for coming up with a fair pay offer for hard-pressed staff.
However, while it is a job well done, unions have warned that workers are still angered by the looming crisis in the NHS.
Staff on sick leave suffering from the stress of being overworked and enduring longer hours with no breaks is a real concern.
As is the more than 6000 nursing and midwifery vacancies caused by an inability to retain workers.
Added to that is the record number of delayed discharges in our hospitals – with social care not cutting the mustard – which means fewer available beds on the wards, leading to more queuing at hospital A&E departments.
It is a grim picture and helps to explain why we are heading for the most severe winter in NHS history.
We can only be thankful health care workers on picket lines will not add to the predicted chaos over the next few months.
