'Damage limitation' - pundits agree on Newcastle United vs Manchester City predictions

Newcastle United will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Manchester City this weekend.

This is the Magpies' third successive game against a side who finished in last season's top five after a 4-0 defeat at Leicester City and the 3-1 loss against Liverpool on Thursday night.

However, Eddie Howe's men can extend their unbeaten run at St James' Park to four matches with a positive result after becoming hard to beat on home soil since his appointment last month.

Meanwhile, opponents City are searching for their seventh successive Premier League victory and could stretch their lead at the top of the division should Liverpool drop points at Tottenham Hotspur.

FiveThirtyEight, a website that gives data-driven predictions for matches, is anticipating Pep Guardiola's team to come away with all three points.

They have forecasted an 83% chance of City winning, with Newcastle behind that on 5%, while a draw is on 12%

Pundits from across the media have given their views on the upcoming fixture and The Chronicle have rounded them up for you.

Mark Lawrenson - BBC

Mark Lawrenson, on the BBC, has tipped City to win the game in convincing fashion and claimed that the Magpies will end the week with a third straight defeat.

He said: "Manchester City seem to have found it tricky at St James' Park in recent years for various reasons and they have not yet taken Newcastle apart there the way they have demolished most teams at one time or another under Pep Guardiola.

"This time, I think they will find it a lot easier. City showed against Leeds what kind of form they are in, while Newcastle go into the game after successive defeats at Leicester and Liverpool.

"I think the Magpies will end the week with another loss, and will just be hoping they don't do more serious damage to their goal difference."

Prediction: Newcastle United 0-3 Manchester City

Michael Owen - BetVictor

Speaking in his BetVictor column, ex-Magpies forward Michael Owen agrees with Lawrenson and has predicted a City victory, although the former sees Newcastle scoring.

He said: "I didn’t think Newcastle played badly at Anfield but it was the same old story for them. I never worry about them scoring goals, but they concede too many soft goals. I’m certain that Eddie Howe’s priority in January will be to get some defenders in the squad.

"City were exceptional against Leeds. When they play like that, they are the best team in the world. It was good to see De Bruyne look back to his best. He’s not quite got going this season but maybe this will be just what he needed.

"I think Newcastle can get a goal in this one. The fans will be really up for this game and that could inspire them. City will have too much quality though and get a few of their own."

Prediction: Newcastle United 1-3 Manchester City

Lewis Jones - Sky Sports

Sky Sports reporter Lewis Jones insists that City will win the contest, but is tipping Newcastle to run them close.

He said: "With a routine, job-done type of performance expected from City, my eyes have wandered to the cards markets with the likelihood of Allan Saint-Maximin being ruled out for this one.

"The French winger picked up a muscular injury at Liverpool and hobbled off and with him unavailable, the chances of cards drops significantly.

"Manchester City's fixtures against bottom half teams have a tendency to produce a low card count anyway due to the one-sided nature of the match where the game could be over by 60 minutes. In six of their eight meetings with bottom-10 teams this season, there has been less than three cards in the match."

Prediction: Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester City
