Damage control: Adam Gase praises Jamal Adams amid Jets friction

As of Thursday, Jamal Adams and Adam Gase had still not spoken following Tuesday’s trade deadline.

The Jets took calls on Adams prior to the deadline, which didn’t sit well with the third-year safety. He believes the Jets broke their word and has taken a personal approach to the situation. Adams, speaking to the media earlier this week, appeared emotionally distraught and said he declined the opportunity to speak with Gase and Joe Douglas until cooler heads prevail.

Both the Jets and Adams are not concerned about the player finishing out the season, but his future beyond that remains to be seen.

Gase, doing his best to smooth things over, offered several compliments for the Jets captain on Thursday.

“I know this: he’s focused on Miami right now,” Gase said before practice. “He practiced well (Wednesday). He went out there. He was flying around. Same energy…. I watched how he interacted with his teammates. He’s focused on this game.”

For now, Gase is attempting to do his best damage control and that starts with praising the way Adams plays the game.

“I think he does a lot of things that put us in a really good position,” Gase added. “I think he is one of the best players we have on our roster. The whole cornerstone and all that stuff.

“I know that we are in a really good position with him at his spot. I feel like we have one of the upper-tier players at that position.”

Gase allows Gregg Williams to control the defense, so it makes sense that the head coach and Adams may not speak throughout the week. Despite the radio silence, Gase appreciates the roles that Adams’ has carved out for himself in Williams’ defense.

“I like him at his spot,” Gase said. “I like him on our defense. I love him on our defense. I think he does a great job.”

The Jets need to butter Adams up, that much is clear. Beyond that, though? Well, there’s a lot up in the air.

Right now, it appears to be a relationship that will be difficult to repair, but time will tell.
