First dates are already stressful enough without discovering you’re apparently participating in a group project. One Dallas woman thought she was heading into a simple first-date brunch. Things seemed normal at first.

He was cute, the restaurant was nice, and he even slid into the booth beside her. Then came the surprise. Just as the waitress asked if it would be a table for two, her date casually revealed that another couple would be joining them.

Why? Because his friend was also going on a first date, and he figured combining the two into one awkward mega-date was a perfectly reasonable idea.

Now she’s asking viewers if she was wrong for how she reacted.

What Happened on this Date?

Every day, new dating stories pop up, many of them more concerning than the last. This time, Isabelle (@belletreat) shares her first date gone wrong. It currently has 407,000 views and over 2,000 comments. Isabelle starts by complaining about the dating scene in Dallas, calling men “boys” and saying that she can make an entire series of how terrible it is.

However, this experience was a new one for her. It starts like any modern relationship usually does: they first meet online and decide they like each other enough to meet in person for dinner. They schedule the dinner date, but he ultimately ends up canceling because of a hair appointment.

He reschedules it for brunch the next day and shares his excitement. She’s relieved when he gets there, calling him cute and saying they both slide into a booth on the same side.

“This is where it all goes downhill,” Isabelle says.

Apparently, she thought nothing of him sitting beside her, saying it can be seen as “cute and fun.” Then the waitress comes and asks if it’s only a party of two.

As Isabelle confirms it, he says, “Actually, no.” Her date then reveals that it’s going to be a party of four.

Isabelle, thinking it’s a joke, laughs along. The waitress leaves four waters on the table and now Isabelle’s confused. When she asks for a reason, her date admits that his friend also had a first date planned for that day, so he thought it was a good idea to just have it together at the same time.

What Does Her Date Do?

Isabelle is frustrated at the switch-up, claiming she didn’t want to meet three new people, just one for the date. Apparently, her date is “caught off-guard” at how she reacts. “So why did you tell me as I was cornered in a booth and now I’m trapped?” Isabelle asks the camera rhetorically. “I feel uncomfortable.”

She agrees that meeting a partner’s friends is all right in other scenarios but definitely not as a first date. A double first date for that matter. She tells him this and says she’s going to leave.

His response? “Yeah, please leave before my friends get here so I can make him an excuse on why you left.”

Isabelle is adamant that he tells his friend the truth about how he “blindsided” her.

She still leaves the restaurant before they arrive. The clip ends with her asking viewers how they’d react if that had happened to them.

Not the First Case of Leaving a Date at the Table

This phenomenon is becoming more and more common, with women from all over the country sharing their first-date horror stories. Not only that, but there were a few where they also had to leave the date at the table and walk out. In one story, a woman had carefully made sure her boundaries were clear before ever embarking on a Hinge first date.

What did her date do? Ignore her boundaries, of course. Completely deliberately as well. She also stood up for herself and left him stunned at the table. In another instance, one woman left because her Hinge date simply couldn’t be bothered to ask her questions or respond enthusiastically to hers. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Viewers Rally Behind Her

A comment with over 4,000 likes calls out the quickly-spreading phenomenon.

“I’m an older millennial and I’ve seen a couple videos of girls walking out on first dates and I just wanted to say, I am so proud of you girls. Standing up for your boundaries and comfort levels is so impressive,” the viewer says.

Another viewer claims, “Let’s normalize walking out the moment it gets weird. you did the right thing. You’re a positive role model.”

One viewer shares her own experience, saying, “I walked out on a date a couple of weeks ago and I’ve never felt more powerful.”

Others focus on more details. “Lost me at hair appointment,” claims one viewer. Another suggests, “I would have stayed and acted more interested in his buddy than him.”

Lastly, one viewer sends a plea into the void, “This is me summoning the other girl to the comment section. May she find this and tell us what happened after you left….”
