Dallas Goedert gives some insight into his relationship with Zach Ertz

Dallas Goedert is one of the top young tight ends in the NFL and if not for Zach Ertz being his teammate, the former South Dakota State star might be mentioned among the best in the game. It’s a tricky line to walk when a franchise has a star at a certain position, and then have another equal talent fall into their lap.

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Goedert in the second round (49th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, and if the league held a redraft of those same players, it’s no doubt that the Eagles young tight end would probably be a first-round pick on hindsight alone.

As a rookie, Goedert had 33 catches for 334 yards and four touchdowns and made Ertz an even more versatile weapon going forward with the Eagles now having the ability to move the Pro Bowl tight end around based on mismatches.

Recently while hosting a football camp in his hometown, Goedert went in-depth with the Argus Leader’s Matt Zimmer, where he gave some insight into his relationship with Ertz and how it wasn’t all peaches and cream in the beginning.

Right away he didn’t talk to me. And my position coach told me it would be like that, that he would make sure I cared and was willing to work, he wasn’t just gonna help out any rookie. But once he saw that I cared, that I was in my playbook trying to learn it, he definitely started giving me tips and our relationship really grew from there.

For Eagles fans who might be worried, the relationship didn’t stay frosty forever, and Ertz had a method to his madness.

We’re getting closer and closer the more time we spend together. He does a great job. He’s an incredible football player. The way he gets in and out of his breaks – everyone is perfect. The way he attacks the day, the way he’s a true professional, takes care of his body, gets ready for practice. He’s an eighth-year pro and I’ve never seen him miss a rep or take a practice off. He’s elevating our (tight end) group so much.

At first glance, Goedert’s comments would have you think that the Eagles may have a tight end controversy at some point, but with the 12 personnel being a dynamic formation for the team and both players capable of doing different things in select matchups, both players should continue to provide the Eagles a top-flight tight end duo for years to come.

Goedert had an excellent spring by all accounts, with his Eagles teammates naming him the player who had the most outstanding spring. Two talented and dynamic tight ends is a problem any coach would love to have.
