TEAM NEEDS

Safety
Cowboys fans have said for years now that the team needs to replace Jeff Heath at strong safety. He is below average and fairly unreliable as a starter on defense. The good news is that Xavier Woods looks to be the free safety next year and should be very solid in that role. The main concern though has to be finding a good box defending safety to start alongside him.
Tight End
Jason Witten coming out of retirement to play for the Cowboys again does not solve their problem at the position. Their tight ends were very ineffective last season as they contributed fairly little to the offense. Witten should provide a consistent option like he was in his younger years but they need an athletic yet consistent threat at the position. Luckily this tight end class is extremely deep this year.
Defensive Tackle
The Cowboys defense predicates itself on athletic, gap shooting defensive tackles to cause disruption. They really need to add a talented 3-tech at some point in this draft to fill that void that is there. They have some solid players already on the roster but could use a true starter who can get up field and penetrate. Much like tight end, the Cowboys are lucky this position is very deep in this class.
Wide Receiver
With the addition of Amari Cooper late last season, the need for receiver isn’t as dire as it once was for the Cowboys. Still, they could stand to add more weapons for Dak Prescott in the passing game. Michael Gallup was decent last year and Cedrick Wilson Jr returning from injury could help but they definitely could use another playmaker or two at this spot.
Pass-Catching Running Back
This last position of need was tough as there are a few ways the Cowboys could go here. Ultimately though, adding another weapon to the offense and a 1-2 punch dynamic to the backfield would be optimal. More playmakers around Dak and a talented running back to spell Zeke Elliott would be a wise investment for the team.
TOP TARGETS

Darnell Savage, Jr. | S | Maryland
Like I mentioned earlier, the Cowboys need a strong safety who can pair with Xavier Woods and be reliable enough to make plays in the running game. That is exactly what Savage is. An extremely athletic safety, Savage would be an immediate impact player who would slide right into that starting spot. He has to be the dream pick for the Cowboys if he falls to their pick in the second round.
Jace Sternberger | TE | TAMU
The Cowboys need an athletic threat at tight end and that is exactly what Sternberger is. Averaging 17.3 yards per catch in his final year at Texas A&M, he would be an ideal vertical threat to add alongside Witten and Cooper in the passing game. Having a player like him over the top would open up a lot of space over the middle for their pass catchers.
Trysten Hill | DL | UCF
The Cowboys love their athletic defensive tackles and that is exactly what Hill is. Scoring as an elite athlete in terms of lateral ability and explosiveness at the combine, Hill fits everything they look for in their 3-tech defensive lineman. Reports are that the Cowboys are really interested as they have workouts scheduled with the talented pass rusher so the fit seems really good for the team as well.
