Dallas-bound flight makes emergency landing in Albuquerque

DALLAS _ A Southwest Airlines flight from Phoenix to Dallas on Sunday night made an emergency landing in New Mexico after smoke reportedly filled the aircraft's cabin.

The plane's 140 passengers included a Dallas police major and several Texas Rangers fans headed home from the team's training camp in Arizona.

An "unusual smell" in the cabin prompted the emergency landing, KXAS-TV reported.

The flight crew announced that there would be an emergency landing, urging passengers to "brace for impact" and keep their heads down.

When the plane landed, passengers evacuated using the escape slides. Some jumped off the wing.

Fire officials in Albuquerque tweeted that two people were injured and taken to a hospital. It was unclear what their injuries were.

"It was a harrowing five minutes coming down," passenger Paul Allen said after making it to Dallas early Monday.

For many on the flight, the highlight of the whole experience was the professionalism that the flight crew showed amid the chaos.

"Just made an emergency landing in Albuquerque. @SouthwestAir flight attendants did a great job!" tweeted Maj. Max Geron.

Rene Lira was sitting in an emergency-exit row during the flight. Many people left all their belongings on the plane before evacuating.

Lira managed to grab his phone before jumping off a wing. He hurt his knuckles and knees during the jump.

Breathing heavily, he called his wife back home in North Texas to tell her what had happened.

"You listen to the instructor giving you instructions what to do in a case of emergency, and how many times you're just _ yeah, that's not going to happen?" said his wife, Patricia Lira. "To get that phone call today was very hard."
