Dalkey Tidy Towns draw chalk circles around dog poo to raise awareness and to make area poo free

Dalkey Tidy Towns has a new plan to shame uncaring dog owners who fail to pick up their pooches' poo.

Volunteers are marking any piles of poo they find with a circle of blue chalk. DTT explained in a post the dangers of dog poo being left unbagged.

They said according to Dogs Trust: "Besides the yuck factor of stepping in dog poo, it can pose a health risk to humans, especially children as there is a risk they could become infected by a parasite called Toxocara canis that can cause blindness."

They hope the blue chalk will make it easier to spot for both locals hoping to avoid stepping on it and will highlight the health risk.

"As blue is our DTT colour, over the coming weeks, we will draw a blue chalk circle around Poo on our pavements.

"Most of our dog owners are very conscientious about using Poo Bags. A few are not and we can all see the mess on Sorrento Road, Ardeevin Road, Castle Street and elsewhere."

The DTT volunteers have to pick up plastic bags of poo that are thrown in bushes each week.

The end goal of this initiative is "To try make Dalkey a dog poo free area."
