Dalkeith mum fumes as daughter turned away from local Sainsbury's after forgetting mask

A Midlothian mum has spoken of her anger after her daughter was turned away from Sainsbury's after forgetting her face covering.

The woman raised an official complaint with the store's head office after the girl was refused entry the shop at Thorny Crook Gardens in Dalkeith, just off Salters Road, this morning.

The girl, who is in first year at high school, arrived to buy her school lunch at the store when she realised she had forgotten her face mask.

The mum expressed her frustration at the whole situation on Facebook, and feels more understanding should have been shown.

She posted: "I'm disappointed in Sainsburys local this morning. Refused my daughter (s1) her school lunch because she forgot her mask. Yes I get she should have one but she genuinely forgot.

"Called them to explain and asked if they had masks for customers, was told yes and she could get one, but then she calls to say it was the same guy that had refused her entry.

"Why treat the kids any different to adults? Their attitude towards school children is awful and it always has been.

"She spends more in that shop on a daily basis than I do! Really disappointed they have had a rubbish year and people like that don't make it any easier."

Sainsbury's say they've provided a high number of masks to school children at the Dalkeith store recently, but are urging people to remember to bring their own.

A spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: "Safety is our highest priority and we encourage all our customers to wear a mask if they are able to. We understand customers may sometimes forget to bring their mask and in these cases we will try to provide one.

“Our Dalkeith Salters Road store has provided a high number of masks to school children in the local area recently and we are asking all customers to please remember to bring their own.”

Most UK supermarkets are banning shoppers from stores if they do not wear face masks, unless they are medically exempt.
