Dalkeith horses reunited with owners after going out for a 5am trot

There was neigh way Dalkeith Road Police officers were going to let two horses get the jump on them in the early hours of this morning.

The officers were saddled with a problem when the two errant equines had gone for a wander before dawn break, but the mane thing was nobody was hurt and the animals were reunited with their owner.

Such a tall tail of horseplay was told on the Road Policing Scotland Twitter account @polscotrpu just past 5:30am.

According to the Smart Driving website, there are around eight road accidents involving horses every day and the majority of accidents with horses occur on minor roads.

An average of 16 riders are also killed, the website reports.

The public are reminded that the Road Policing Scotland Twitter account is not for reporting crime and 101 should be dialled for non-emergency calls and 999 in an emergency.
