Dale Earnhardt Jr. may retire if he wins NASCAR title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. _ Dale Earnhardt Jr. might be hitching up for his last ride.

A walk-off NASCAR championship and go off into the sunset? Perfect.

"To come back this year, win a championship, it would be hard not to hang it up," he said during NASCAR Media Day at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday morning.

"This is the last year of my deal. I would like to race more. But if I win the championship, I'd have to consider going out on top. I mean, I don't know. It just really depends on a lot of different things."

Earnhardt, 42, is making a heralded comeback to NASCAR Nation after missing 18 races last season with concussion-related symptoms.

He is in his last year of his contract with Hendrick Motor Sports, but he wants to defer any negotiations until he is certain he has cleared all his health issues. He does not anticipate any issues otherwise.

Winning his first NASCAR Cup title would definitely change the dynamics.

"I'd definitely consider it because that's the last box I don't have checked really," he said. "There's a few races I'd like to win. The championship would definitely be the icing on the cake for my career."
