Dalbeattie youngsters looking to trace Whitehaven writer of letter in a bottle

Two Dalbeattie youngsters are trying to trace the mystery writer of a letter sent in a bottle more than 20 years ago.

Lexie Sanderson, aged 10, and seven-year-old sister Emmie were out for a walk with dad David at Burnfoot near Dundrennan when they made the exciting discovery.

The bottle contained a letter – although no note – from a Mrs T Smith of Whitehaven and was sent in March, 1999.

David said: “We try to go for a walk every Saturday as the girls don’t like being in around the house. We’ve been to Burnfoot a few times before – we usually go down and turn right but this time we went left.

“Lexie found it and she was quite excited. There was no message in the bottle, just the letter.”

The girls’ mum, Michelle, shared news of the January 4 discovery on social media in a bid to find the original letter writer.

David added: “We posted it on Facebook and it’s been shared a few times.”

This isn’t the first message in a bottle that’s been found at Burnfoot.

Last January, John Brown from Dalbeattie discovered a message that Ryan Gillan had dropped in Kirkcudbright Harbour in September, 1998, when he was aged eight.

After tracing the original sender, John headed to Kirkcudbright to reunite grown-up Ryan and dad Ian Cameron-Smith with his message.
