Dalbeattie youngster suffers cut leg after getting stuck in fire hydrant

A Dalbeattie youngster suffered cuts to her leg after it got stuck in a fire hydrant.

Casey Henderson had popped to the ice cream van when her leg went through the manhole on Glenshalloch Road on Monday night.

Neighbours struggled to free the distressed nine-year-old from the hole before dad Christopher arrived and was able to get her out.

Angry mum Anne said: “I’m furious. If that had been an old person they could have broken their hip.

“It’s horrific – she had just gone out to the ice cream van. She was walking back and put her foot down and it has gone right through and got stuck.

“The neighbours came out to try to pull her out. They asked if I wanted the fire brigade or an ambulance but I didn’t know. I phoned my husband and he was able to come to pull her out.

“I’ve reported it to Scottish Fire and Rescue but haven’t heard back yet. I’ve also put it on Facebook to let people know about it.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We have received a complaint in relation to a fire hydrant on Glenshalloch Road, Dalbeattie.

“The hydrant has been inspected and reported to Scottish Water and we are continuing to assist them in resolving this issue.”
