Dalbeattie war memorial highlighted as one of best in Dumfries and Galloway

Dalbeattie war memorial has been highlighted as one of the best in the region.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion Scotland – now known as Legion Scotland – the council provided funding for war memorials to be improved and tidied up.

The Dalbeattie branch of Legion Scotland was one of those to take advantage, carrying out work at the memorial in Colliston Park ahead of a ceremony in September to mark its 100th anniversary.

And their work has been recognised in a council competition to show off the best, with the Dalbeattie memorial being named the joint winner of the large community with garden category. Lochmaben was the other winner.

The council’s Armed Forces champion councillor Archie Dryburgh said: “The brave men and women
whose names are listed on these memorials are long gone but in many cases their descendants are still in that town or village.”
