Dalbeattie Star sign Irvine Meadow defender Ronan Kearney

Dalbeattie Star have brought in Ronan Kearney from Irvine Meadow.

The former Alloa Athletic and Albion Rovers youngster will help beef up the defence of the Lowland League’s bottom side.

Boss Eddie Warwick said: “He’s a fullback who can play midfield as well.

“He gives us an option to be better than we are – we’d be interested in anyone who’s better than what we have just now.

“We’re kind of in stage two. We’ve got the best of the free agents, we know our best 11 and formation and now we’re trying to get better players to fit in.

“Ronan is one of the ones that fits the bill.”

The weather put paid to Kearney’s plans for a debut on Saturday as Star’s game with Bo’ness United was called off due to a frozen pitch.

And Warwick fears Saturday’s trip to Civil Service Strollers and Wednesday’s clash with Celtic’s youngsters will go the same way.

He said: “Three of our next four games are on grass so we’re not looking like playing any football between now and Hogmanay when we play Gretna which is on plastic.

“We lost the game at the weekend, we have Civil this weekend and their pitch is currently under three inches of snow so that’s not likely to be on, then we have Celtic at home on December 21 and our pitch is frozen solid at the moment.

“The weather will decide what is going to happen over the next three weeks and we just need to be ready.”

Should Saturday’s game beat the weather, Warwick is expecting a tough encounter.

He added: “It’ll be extremely difficult. They’ve just gone to East Stirling and beaten them 3-1 at Falkirk. They’re a really good team – they have an unorthodox style of playing, they’re well drilled and have good experience in the spine of the team.

“We’ll go with confidence and have a game plan but it’ll be really hard.”
