Dalbeattie Star set to return to action against Spartans after two blank Saturdays

Dalbeattie Star were left without a game for the second weekend running on Saturday.

Heavy rain put paid to the Lowland League clash with BSC Glasgow at Islecroft, just a week after their South of Scotland Challenge Cup tie at Lockerbie against Mid Annandale was frozen off.

But Ritchie Maxwell’s players haven’t been totally idle as the cup tie went ahead last midweek, Star running out 4-1 winners.

The manager said: “We managed to get the Mids game in during the week so the good thing is we’re not going in on the back of two blank Saturdays.

“It was disappointing for Saturday’s game to be called off but with it being a grass park there was always that chance of that happening.

“I think there was an inspection on Friday morning and it was pretty soft, then it rained on Friday morning and there was more forecast so it was the right decision.

“I don’t think we’ll have a backlog later in the season and a positive from it is it means everyone else has caught up. We’d played maybe two or three games more than the teams round about us but we’ve all played the same now.”

Star head to Edinburgh on Saturday to face Spartans as they look for their first league win in more than two months.

They have a good record at Ainslie Park and it took a late goal to separate the sides at Islecroft earlier in the season.

Maxwell added: “The good thing this weekend is it’s on 3G so it should be on. It’s a ground we’ve done well at so hopefully we can go there and take the opportunity to pick up some points.

“They had two boys sent off on Saturday and I’d imagine they’ll be missing. We’ll definitely be going up there looking to bring points back.”

Star will be without suspended pair Calvin Cowie and Liam Park as well as the injured Steven Degnan.
