Dalbeattie Star’s pre-season games have started with rather differing results.
On Tuesday night, they came from behind to see off Heston Rovers at Islecroft but on Saturday they lost 6-3 at home to English side Seaham Red Star.
Boss Ritchie Maxwell said: “It was a more physical game, which we expected. We played some good football and the first goal was a fantastic team goal.
“There were positive signs from it, for the first 60 minutes we played well and then we made eight changes in quite a short period and that disrupted the flow.
“They were able to score three late goals but I don’t think it was a fair reflection on it.
“The first goal was a great team goal, right from the back to the finish from Declan Tremble.
“We attack as a team but we also defend as a team so there is a bit of work to do on that side, but that’s why we have these friendlies.”
Although Star brought in eight players last week, the new manager is still looking to add to his squad ahead of the Lowland League season kicking off at the end of the month.
He explained: “We had a young boy in from the Borders who played the full 90 minutes at centre half on Saturday. He did OK and we’ve asked him back to have another look at him.
“If we are able to bring in players of quality that will improve the squad we will and the players that we have brought in so far have probably exceeded expectations.
“We’re probably ahead of where I expected to be at this stage.”
Tonight, Star face local rivals Threave Rovers before they play Bedlington Terriers on Saturday. Both games are at Islecroft.
