Dalbeattie Star "playing a waiting game" over rest of Lowland League season

Dalbeattie Star are “playing a waiting game” over the remainder of the Lowland League season.

The Islecroft club hasn’t played since the draw with Gretna 2008 just before Christmas thanks to a combination of the weather and football being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And while an announcement on Tuesday allowed football at some levels to resume, there is still no date for the return of the Lowland or South of Scotland Leagues.

Gaffer Ritchie Maxwell said: “We’re just playing a waiting game.

“I’ve heard the League One and League Two clubs talking about maybe going to an 18-game season and only playing 50 per cent of their fixtures.

“The problem with that is teams in our league have all played different numbers of games. We still could have 22 league games to play and it will be difficult fitting that in, even if we play twice a week.

“We’ve just been trying to keep the boys updated, but we only know what’s getting put out – we don’t know anything else.”

Tuesday’s news from the SFA and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon allowed for the immediate return of Leagues One and Two and the Scottish Women’s Premier League One.

Further discussions will take place in the next few weeks over other levels.

Amid all the uncertainty, Maxwell and his backroom team are already beginning to think about next season even though a decision has yet to be made on what will happen with the 2020/21 campaign.

He explained: “I think you have got to start planning because regardless of what happens with finishing this season, you still have next season to go.

“We’ve spoken to all the boys about contracts for next year and I’ve spoken to Chris Jardine and the other coaches about potential targets.

“I hope there won’t be a massive turnover. We’re looking at bringing in two or three and out of respect to them and their clubs we won’t be speaking to them just now because this season isn’t finished yet and they could still end up playing for their clubs.”
