Dalbeattie Star lose to Gretna 2008 in Dumfries and Galloway Lowland League derby

Gretna 2008 claimed the Dumfries and Galloway bragging rights on Monday afternoon with a surprise win over Dalbeattie Star.

The sides kicked off 2022 with a Lowland League derby at Raydale.

And the league placings suggested it would be the visitors who came out on top. Star headed into the game 11th in the table while Gretna were second bottom with just one win to their name all season.

However, the old cliche about the form book going out of the window in derbies came true thanks to Ollie McDonald.

The forward put Gretna in front after half an hour and extended his side’s advantage just before the break.

Russell Currie reduced the deficit with a header with a quarter of an hour to go but it wasn’t enough, the hosts even having the luxury of missing a penalty.

Both sides are on their travels this weekend with Star taking on Rangers B and Gretna heading to Broomhill.
