Dalbeattie Star finally off the mark with 1-0 Lowland League victory over Edinburgh University

Dalbeattie Star finally got off the mark on Saturday with victory over Edinburgh University.

Ritchie Maxwell’s men had failed to record a point or goal from their previous five Lowland League matches.

But a Lee Wells goal midway through the first half was enough to give Star their first win of the campaign — much to the delight of their manager who will be back in the dugout this weekend after a family holiday.

He said: “It was good to get the text on Saturday to say we had scored a goal and won a game. It’s good to get that monkey off our back and hopefully we can build on that.

“I don’t think anybody else has had a more difficult start. If you look at the fixtures we’ve played — Bonnyrigg, BSC, Kelty Hearts and East Kilbride. They are all top teams which the league table is showing at the moment.”

The only goal of Saturday’s game arrived when Phil Middlemiss and Steven Degnan combined to tee up Wells to fire past Kieran McDougall.

Aiden Kerr almost doubled the lead soon after while, in the second half, Steven Degnan had a few chances to make the win more comfortable.

Star also had to overcome the loss of Curtiss Wilson, the defender leaving at half-time as his wife had gone into labour. He is likely to be available for all of this weekend’s game at Islecroft with Star playing host to East Stirlingshire.

Maxwell, who will also make his return, said: “After having a week off from them we’re up against one of the big spenders again on Saturday.

“It’s at home which is good as we have had some good performances at home. We were a penalty kick away from probably getting a point against East Kilbride and we beat Edinburgh University there on Saturday.

“We were without quite a few players on Saturday for one reason or another but most of them should be back and Curtiss should be there as well.”
