Dalbeattie Star boss pleased with performance in friendly defeat to Annan Athletic

Dalbeattie Star have experienced victory and defeat playing against sides in yellow and black kits in the last week.

A Steven Black goal saw them beat Abbey Vale at Islecroft during the week before they lost 3-1 at Annan Athletic on Saturday.

Star took the lead when Jack Steele headed in Lewis Sloan’s free-kick but an own goal from Jack Dickinson drew Annan level before the interval.

A Mark Docherty penalty gave the hosts the lead in the second half before Iain Anderson – who swapped Islecroft for Galabank during the summer – completed the scoring late on.

Gaffer Ritchie Maxwell said: “The games were both really good and worthwhile.

“Abbey Vale are a good South of Scotland team and we were able to give all the boys game time. Most of them played 45 minutes or an hour which is what you want in pre-season.

“Annan was also a really worthwhile exercise. We played well for 45 or 50 minutes against a good level so I think the build-up so far has been good. There are lots of positives we can take.”

Star have more friendlies against Stranraer and Queen of the South lined up this week with the Lowland League due to begin later this month.

And Maxwell fully expects the return of competitive football, despite the Highland League opting to delay the start of their season.

He said: “We are still expecting to go to BSC Glasgow on October 10 and are planning our games around that.

“It’s been a while without a game but it seems to be coming round fast.”

Maxwell is also hoping to make at least one further addition to his squad before the new season begins.
