Dalbeattie Star boss confident squad will cope with departure of key players

Dalbeattie Star boss Ritchie Maxwell reckons his squad won’t suffer from key players leaving.

Hugh Cameron and Lewis Todd will be playing for Threave Rovers next season, with forward Scott Milligan also heading for pastures new.

But Maxwell has wasted no time in signing new players in the month since he took over from Darren Kerr.

He said: “They are all going to be going for different reasons. It’s not for footballing reasons, it’s for personal reasons and things with work.

“They have been big players for the last few years but we are happy with the ones that we have brought in – we will be replacing quality with quality.

“We’ve got four signed up so far and we’re still looking at another two or three which will bring the squad up.

“We can’t say who they are at the moment as they’re still contracted to other clubs but we should be able to in the next few weeks.”

Star’s new-look squad will start pre-season trainingon June 18 with the first friendly against South of Scotland League outfit Heston Rovers.

They’ll then face Wearside’s Seaham Red Star before taking on Threave Rovers and Bedlington Terriers.

All four games will be at Islecroft with Maxwell keen to fit in some more games before the big kick-off.
