Dalbeattie Star boss calls for side to build on opening Lowland League victories

Dalbeattie Star boss Ritchie Maxwell has called on his side to build on their opening day victory over Civil Service Strollers.

Lewis Sloan’s first-half penalty proved to be the only goal at a sun-drenched Islecroft, meaning Star avoid the problem of previous seasons when they have had to wait several weeks to get off the mark.

And now Maxwell wants his players to take confidence from that run as they go into a busy few weeks.

He said: “We had an opportunity to get the win and we took it, which means we don’t have to wait until the sixth game which has happened in the last few years.

“It’s a great way to start but the games are coming thick and fast and we need to build on that. There’s no point winning on Saturday and not picking anything else up from the next three or four games.

“I think we were probably the better team and deserved to win. Temperature wise it was difficult for the players but in terms of chances created we could probably have scored two or three. We limited their opportunities to pot shots from long range.

“It was probably a fair result, if anything we could probably have won more comfortably if we’d taken our chances, especially in the second half.”

Maxwell’s words were obviously heeded as Star made it two wins in a row on Tuesday night.

Russell Currie scored in both halves to open his account for his new club as Star ran out 2-0 victors at Caledonian Braves.

This weekend Star face a tricky trip to Bo’ness United to face a side which has impressed since arriving in the Lowland League.

Maxwell said: “They’ve been in the top three or four when the season has been called in the last two years.

“It’ll be another difficult game but after the period we’ve had off I think that’s what the boys are looking for. They want a good run of games and to take the opportunity to put points on the board to build some momentum and confidence.”

Star have made further signings in the last few days with both Dylan Cairnie and Harry Emmerson penning permanent deals following impressive showings as trialists.

Maxwell added: “It adds a wee bit more depth to the squad. They’re both very good quality.”
