Dalbeattie residents urged to get involved in restoring Colliston Park pond

Dalbeattie residents are being urged to take the plunge and help save the town pond.

The community council has more than £36,000 to upgrade the Colliston Park water feature.

And it hopes a public meeting tonight will produce an action group to guide the project.

Chairman Robert McGoldrick said: “We are looking for a committed group of volunteers to take charge.

“We have more than £36,000 from the sale of common good land.

“We want to get this forward and finished.

“But we need to get the people of Dalbeattie involved because it is their pond.”

The once well-maintained pond was a popular attraction in bygone days.

Locals and visitors could hire boats while the park featured a putting green.

But recently leaky concrete has meant the water often disappears, leaving slimy green puddles behind.

Various restoration schemes have been proposed including a reed bed and ornamental plants.

Others have suggested the former boating lake should be restored to its original state.

Mr McGoldrick added: “We have to have the council alongside us.

“But we need a sub group to draw up a proper plan.

“There have been a lot of folk talking about it.

“We are hoping for a big turnout.”

Dalbeattie Community Council’s pond meeting in the lesser town hall opens at 7.15pm.
