Dalbeattie Primary has recently been awarded its seventh Eco Schools flag - and plans to mark the occasion with an activity for the Easter holidays.
For the previous six awards, there was a celebration with a big assembly and refreshments to which community partners were invited.
Many parents, local groups and organisations such as Dalbeattie Rotary Club, Rotakids, the council’s grounds staff and community safety teams, Dalbeattie Co-op, Tesco, Kinnairds, Wilko, Galloway Fisheries, Finlay Carson MSP and Dr Stephanie Johnstone have been and continue to be much valued community supporters in the eco work.
This year, restrictions mean a large gathering to celebrate is not possible. As a result, the school is launching the 7K for Seven Flags Eco Challenge to mark the occasion and to encourage families to be active during the Easter holidays.
This challenge is a fitting event because it offers an activity for the Easter holidays, when travel is still restricted, and it makes good use of the wonderful countryside resources on the doorstep.
The route also uses part of the 7 Stanes Bike Trails - fitting with the seven theme of the challenge.
The route starts at the old primary School on Southwick Road, opposite the entrance to Spycraig Wood where the first green flag was awarded.
Along the route there will be seven questions – one for each kilometre of the walk.
Each question will be either at the beginning of a 1km segment, somewhere along it or at its end.
Every challenge question will link to the theme of seven.
Because Eco Schools work draws upon all curricular areas, the questions for the trail do as well. They also span all Curricular for Excellence levels, so parents will need to help with younger children. This is very much a family event.
Details will be published to parents through the school blog and School Dojo platforms.
Dalbeattie Rotary Club will be judging and sponsoring the prizes for the photo competition, linked to the challenge.
