Dalbeattie man unhappy with Dumfries and Galloway Council for not providing grit bin

The council has promised to take another look at a grit bin demand in Dalbeattie.

The authority has been under fire for refusing to provide one in Queens Grove.

Thomas McMurtrie, who has been spearheading the push, wants the bin so he and neighbours can put salt down to make the streets safe in freezing weather.

But he has been told he should use the salt stored at nearby Johnston Drive...on the other side of the busy A711 road.

Retired school janitor Mr McMurtrie said: “We are not asking them to do anything. Me and two other guys from the scheme are quite happy to do it if they will give us the grit.

“There will be old bins that are empty – there will be one at the old school and there’s one at the old police station we could have.

“It is across a busy road. There are buses and lorries that come flying along there and they are asking us to cross that.

“There’s not many young folk here. There’s a lady with dementia who goes wandering and there is another lady who is 90 next year who, if she slips, could be in real danger. The rest of us are in their 60s and 70s.

“I’ve been trying to get something done for quite a few years but this time I’ve been like a dog with a bone.”

A council spokesman said: “Our policy is for there to be a minimum 250 metres between salt bins but there can be quite specific reasons for an option in between. We’ll reassess this situation based on any new info.”
