Dalbeattie High School S4 students to take part in sponsored walk to raise money for Epilepsy Connections

A group of students in S4 at Dalbeattie High School will be stepping out this spring to raise money for the charity Epilepsy Connections.

They are planning a sponsored walk from Dalbeattie to Rockcliffe to raise money and awareness.

Fifteen-year-old Rebecca McIver has epilepsy and came up with the plan.

She said: “When I was 10 years old I was diagnosed with epilepsy. At this time it was very scary and hard to understand as I knew nothing about this illness and neither did my family.

“It took nearly three years to stabilise my epilepsy with medication.”

She added: “I am now nearly 16-years-old. My seizures were under control until last October and I am now trying new medicine to try to bring them back under control.

“This means at times I am quite unwell and in and out of hospital for short times. I have great support from my friends and family but it is still hard.”

Rebecca’s pals have been quick to rally round and good friend Chelsea said: “Until Rebecca moved to Dalbeattie, I didn’t know much about epilepsy. Seeing what she has been through and what she has to cope with has certainly opened our eyes.”

The students have set up a Just Giving page and would welcome any donations. The walk is due to take place in April during the Easter holidays.
